Two Filipino seafarers were missing after an explosion and fire engulfed a liquefied natural gas carrier in Nantong, Jiangsu province. The 2,999 dwt Golden Crux 18, operated by Daiichi Tanker, was at the mouth of the Yangtze River on its way to South Korea when an unexplained explosion ripped through its engine room.
According to the China News Services story, 12 of the ship’s 14 crew managed to abandon ship safely as the fire tore through the vessel.
In a separate incident, three workers died on 6 April in a fire on board a Liberian-registered cargo vessel under repair at a Shanghai shipyard. The fire at the China Shipping (Group)-owned yard took three hours to be brought under control, China Daily reported. Three Chinese workers died and six more were injured in the fire. The police are investigating the cause of the incident.
