A major landslide in Jiangxi province on 23 May derailed a passing train on the Shanghai-Kunming railway line and caused 19 deaths. Initial investigations showed that the rain storms that preceded the accident had loosened the earth on a nearby mountain.
The Shanghai-Kunming line, one of China’s major east-west routes, is a busy line with an average of one train passing the accident spot every five minutes, according to local media.
After 19 hours of restoration work, the line resumed operation. Local railway officials are keeping a round-the-clock watch on the track. | |
