Jiujiang Maritime Safety Authorities started to impose new shipping restrictions from 1 July in an effort to safeguard the riverbank area under its jurisdiction. Passing vessels are instructed to slow down and stay well clear of the riverbank. Anchoring is forbidden close to the banks and loading and unloading operations near protected areas have been suspended.

Heavy storms in recent weeks have raised the water in Jiujiang to a dangerous level and this has threatened the stability of the riverbank, according to local media.

Jiujiang is the only major Yangtze port in Jiangxi province.
