Security cameras are to operate in all taxis in the city of Wuhu, Anhui province, according to a Xinhua report.
The cameras, which will be installed in more than 3,000 taxis, are intended to keep drivers safe. They will form part of a device that also includes global positioning software and a panic-button near the driver’s seat which, when pushed, sends out an alert to a taxi surveillance centre.
The report highlighted some disquiet among local residents, who claim that their privacy will be violated.
Cab videos will be turned on automatically once the driver starts the meter. Transportation authorities say the recordings will be handled discreetly and erased after a month.
