China extends shipbuilding lead

Output from China’s shipbuilding industry totalled Rmb424.8bn in the first eight months of 2010, up 23.4 percent year-on-year. However, the growth rate is 10.3 per cent lower than in the previous year, according to a report from the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry.

Exports for the sector totalled Rmb186.7bn, up 17.5 per cent.

China has extended its world shipbuilding lead over the course of this year, according to Clarkson Research Services and other sources. The country posted 51.93m compensated gross tons (CGT) in order backlogs and had a market share of 36.4 per cent as of early October, the largest percentage in its history.

The next largest producer, South Korea, recorded 46.16m CGT in backlogs and claimed 32.4 per cent of the market.

In terms of new orders, China is far ahead of Korea with an accumulated 10.73m CGT between January and September − 45.6 per cent of the total. Korea received 8.96m CGT of new orders during the same period. ?
