On 24 October, a strong cold front from the north and Typhoon Megi from the south caused the first severe weather of the autumn in the Changshu section of the Yangtze Mouth. A heavy rainstorm was forecast in the following 48 hours coupled with a drop in temperature of as much as 10 degrees Centigrade or more. Changshu MSA officials issued a severe weather warning through various means including text messaging and in particular advised small vessels to seek shelter.
In a separate event, an ocean-going vessel from Shanghai suffered an engine breakdown on 27 October and was blown by strong winds towards the busy Jiangyin stretch of the Yangtze, where it narrowly avoided a collision thanks to the rescue efforts of Jiangyin MSA officials. | |
