Yichang-Wanzhou railway starts track testing

3 November 2010
The 377km Yichang-Wanzhou railway, one of the most technically challenging ever to be built in China, has started the track testing phase. Trains departed Yichang at a speed of 80-160kph to collect track data for analysis. Pilot operation is scheduled to start by the end of this month.

The Rmb22.7bn project passes through 114 tunnels and over 183 bridges. It took six years to build, twice the time it took to construct the entire 2,600km Beijing-Kowloon railway line.

The Yichang-Wanzhou line is part of the Shanghai-Chengdu express railway, scheduled for completion by the end of 2011. By then, the journey time between Shanghai and Chengdu will be reduced from the current 42 hours to 10 hours.
