17 November 2010
The final tracks have been laid on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, state media reported. When it opens in 2012, the 1,318km line will be the world’s longest high-speed railway. Travel time between the two cities will be reduced to some four hours from the current 10 hours.

China’s high-speed rail network currently stretches for 7,431km.
