According to the Yangtze River Waterway Bureau, waterway officials have received compensation for the money they spent on repairing the shipping channel in Jiujiang that was caused by a vessel collision. On 6 September the vessel ‘Zhepu 23016’, carrying 960 tons of cement downstream, and another vessel ‘Jihaipeng’ carrying 149 containers upstream, collided in the Zhangjiazhou section, causing the dry bulker to break into two and sink near the middle of the shipping channel. All eight crew members who fell into the water were rescued. Six floating cranes were deployed to salvage the sunken vessel.
It is not clear whether it was the vessel owner or his insurer who paid the money, and how much was involved, but officials are taking an increasingly tough line on such matters and say they will impose financial sanctions on those who cause damage to the waterway. | |
