The second phase construction of Chongqing’s Cuntan Bonded Port Area is due to start operating by the end of May 2001.
Incorporating both an airport and port, the bonded area covers 8.37 sq km. It is expected to be fully completed by 2015. Phase two occupies 2.37 sq km, and it aims to attract high-end electronics companies.
Chongqing port’s container capacity grew to 2m TEU in 2010, an eight-fold increase on its capacity in 2005. General cargo-handling capacity rose to 130m tonnes, double the figure of five years earlier, reported Xinhua. The expansion has coincided with a surge in the city’s foreign trade performance. Last year the city’s exports grew 75 per cent year-on-year to US$7.49bn, nearly 44 per cent higher than the national average.
