Chongqing is to invest Rmb28.5bn in its waterways during the current five-year plan (2011-15), according to the local government. The work will include dredging and terminal projects. During this period, cargo-handling capacity will increase from 130m tons to 180m tons and container capacity will rise from 2m TEU to 7m TEU.
The city’s total length of navigable waterway is currently 4,451km, of which 1,350km can accommodate vessels of 500dwt and above.
