According to the Yangtze Waterway Bureau, Taicang’s cargo throughput rose significantly in the first two months of 2011 as a result of the Yangtze Mouth dredging project that has brought the guaranteed minimum water level to 12.5 metres. Throughput of general cargo at the Jiangsu port rose by 36 per cent year-on-year to 14.48m tons, while container throughput jumped by 40 per cent to 334,006 TEU. The number of extra large vessels increased by 30 per cent, though the base figure was not given.
