Spot rates for shipping containers from Shanghai to Europe have dropped below US$1,000 per TEU for the first time since March 2009, according to the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO). The downturn is due to low volumes and fierce competition, said the Copenhagen-based shipping body.

“Rate cuts are ongoing as liner companies struggle to fill their vessels,” BIMCO analyst Peter Sand said.
