A traffic jam stretching nearly 100km has reappeared on an expressway in north Inner Mongolia autonomous region following similar problems last year, reported Xinhua.
The severe congestion occurred as reconstruction and expansion work on the Inner Mongolia section of the Beijing-Tibet highway and a parallel state-level road started on 10 July. The work will take two years to complete.
A long queue of mostly trucks was seen on 19 July along the highway from Zhuozi county in the city of Ulanqab to Hohhot, the regional capital.
A coal truck driver from neighbouring Hebei province said he had covered the 100km road section in 40 hours.
Rising levels of coal transportation has been blamed for the traffic jams on the Beijing-Tibet highway, the major transport route for the country’s largest coal-producing region. | |
