Shanghai port increased its container throughput in August by 6.2 per cent year-on-year, according to statistics from Shanghai International Port (Group). However the 2.81m TEU recorded represented a 3.1 per cent decline on the previous month’s total.

In the first eight months of this year Shanghai handled 21m TEU compared with 19.1m TEU in the same period of 2010.

Last year Shanghai overtook Singapore to become the world’s largest container port.
