The amount of cargo carried by China’s railways increased 8 per cent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2011 to 2.92bn tonnes.

Trains transported 1.68bn tonnes of coal between January and September, along with 101m tonnes of crude oil, 70m tonnes of grain and 64m tonnes of fertiliser and farm pesticide.
