Maanshan posts 80 per cent rise in container throughput

19 October 2011
Official statistics show that container throughput in Maanshan Port jumped 80 per cent year-on-year to 60,619 TEU in the first nine months of 2011 and is expected to reach 80,000 TEU for the full year.

The upturn was a direct result of Maanshan Iron and Steel containerising some of its steel products, according to Maanshan Daily. At the end of last year the steel producer, which owns 45 per cent of the port, decided to transport its coils and H-shaped products in containers for its domestic trade to Guangzhou.

Shanying Paper, another large local manufacturer, provided a further boost to throughput as production at the mill increased in response to high demand, leading to increased imports of waste paper from the US and Japan.
