Changshu imports record timber volume

26 October 2011
Changshu port in Jiangsu province imported 1.502m cubic metres of timber worth US$236m during the first nine months of 2011, a record high in terms of both volume and value, according to China News Services.

The volume of imported timber arriving at Changshu port has been rising rapidly over recent years, from 482,000 cubic metres in 2008 to 885,000 cubic metres in 2009 and 1.528m cubic metres in 2010.

A number of factors have contributed to the upturn in trade, including a fall in timber prices in overseas markets, an increase in supply and lower shipping costs. By the end of this year, the volume is expected to exceed 1.9m cubic metres.
