The Three Gorges GPS vessel management system is now capable of sending text messages with a range of information useful to vessels about to pass the shiplocks, including navigational conditions, water levels and weather forecasts. This service will be particularly helpful to the many private ship owners who dominate shipping on the Yangtze.

The use of the GPS vessel management system has already allowed an increasing number of GPS-equipped vessels to apply for passing slots just four hours in advance rather than the 24 hours previously. This has improved both the safety and efficiency of the shiplocks.
