Work starts on new energy auto zone in Wuhan

30 November 2011
Construction of the New Energy Auto Zone started on 28 November in Jiangxia district, southeast of Wuhan. Guotong Qingyang New Energy Auto Co, a joint venture between Dongfeng Yangtze Automobile (Wuhan) and Guotong Qingshan New Energy Hi-Tech, will invest Rmb900m in the first phase to develop, build and sell new energy cars and key components such as power batteries, generators and electric control systems.

The first phase will occupy 98 acres of land and is scheduled to be completed by June 2013.

Locally manufactured electric powered buses are being deployed on a trial basis on Bus Route 597 in Wuhan, using batteries developed by the joint venture. Board chairman Shi Jun said that the company plans to invest Rmb20bn in the next phase to turn the zone into a new energy auto zone with full research and development capabilities.

District officials believe that once production starts, the zone will help facilitate other supporting industries such as new materials, chemicals, electronics and machinery.
