Yangtze cargo throughput up 14% in 2011

11 January 2012
Statistics from the Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport show that throughput of general cargo rose by 14 per cent last year to nearly 1.6bn tons and throughput of containers jumped by 23.2 per cent to 11.19m TEU.

Throughput of foreign trade-related cargo was 195m tons, or just a little over 12 per of the total, up by 15.3 per cent year-on-year. However, this is a slightly misleading picture due to the way data is categorised. Only cargo transported directly between a foreign origin or destination and a Yangtze port is counted as foreign trade-related. The same cargo, if transhipment is needed between the Yangtze ports, would be categorised as domestic cargo. The true level of foreign trade-related traffic volume is therefore considerably larger than the official figures suggest.

Throughput of the foreign trade-related cargo grew consistently throughout last year, with December ending at 15.5 per cent up to 16.7m tons, compared with the 6.4 per cent growth of total throughput of general cargo to 137m tons.
