Three Gorges shiplift towers over dam

29 February 2012
A new shiplift being constructed at the Three Gorges Dam has now grown taller than the dam itself, reported Xinhua. Four concrete towers that support the shiplift have topped 189 metres, just six metres short of the structure’s eventual full height. The pouring of concrete for the towers will be completed by the end of June.

When it is working in 2015, the shiplift will be the largest and most sophisticated of its type in the world, according to Chen Fei, general manager of the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Development Corporation.

The vertical-hoisting ‘elevator’ will help vessels under 3,000 dwt pass the dam without having to wait in a queue to go through the five locks. This will free up the locks for larger ships.
