Members of NCC call for more aggressive dredging in middle reaches

14 March 2012
Members of the National Consultative Council from Hubei province, currently attending national conferences, have called for more ambitious dredging to tackle the bottleneck in the middle reaches of the Yangtze. They suggested that, by 2025, the government should aim to allow 5,000 dwt barges on the stretch between Chongqing and Wuhan rather than 3,000 dwt ones at the moment, and 5,000dwt ocean-going vessels on the stretch between Wuhan and Wuhu. Ocean-going vessels of 10,000dwt should be able to sail to Wuhu.

They want waterway officials and environment protection agencies work together on a feasible plan.

The Three Gorges Dam has slowed down the speed of the water, leaving more silt and exacerbating the problem of shoals immediately downstream. In the dry season, maritime safety officials crack down hard on overloading as the number of vessels getting stranded increases in the area, creating a real bottleneck.
