Wuhan-Guangzhou railway to extend to Shenzhen

21 March 2012
Wuhan Railway Bureau announced recently that the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway will be extended to Shenzhen from 1 April. A new service schedule will be put in place by then. The fastest journey time between Wuhan and Shenzhen will be a little over four hours.

The Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway forms the southern part of the Beijing-Guangzhou passenger line. It runs through the provinces of Hubei, Hunan and Guangdong province, covering 1,069km. Services started in December 2009, with trains travelling at a maximum speed of 394kph. From 1 July 2011, the speed was reduced as a result of major accidents elsewhere on China’s high-speed network. The longest journey time currently between Wuhan and Guangzhou is six hours.

These new high-speed passenger lines are designed to free up capacity for freight transport.
