Chongqing targets continued air cargo growth

4 April 2012
Chongqing Airport is targeting 22m passengers and 300,000 tonnes of cargo in 2012, according to Chongqing Daily. The airport reported a 20.6 per cent year-on-year increase in passenger numbers to 19.1m and a 19.6 per cent growth in cargo volume to 236,700 tonnes in 2011, making it the fastest growing airport out of China’s largest 10 airports.

“Overseas-bound air freight is snowballing,” Zhang Qiang, a Jiangbei airport official, told CargoNews Asia. “International air freight soared by about 10 times last year to exceed 57,500 tonnes.”

Chen Shiqin, deputy general manager of Chongqing Airport Group, the operator of the airport, attributed the sharp rise to Chongqing’s emergence as Asia’s largest production base for notebook computers, which are mostly transported by air express.

The airport now has 13 international air freighter routes, serving destinations such as Amsterdam, Dhaka, Liege, Luxemburg, Moscow and Chicago.
