Fishing ban starts in Yangtze’s lower reaches

4 April 2012
An annual three-month fishing ban began on 1 April in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River as part of efforts to preserve fish stocks. The ban, which will run until 30 June, also applies to the Hanjiang River, a major tributary of the Yangtze that flows through Hubei province, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The seasonal ban, which has been in place since 2002, covers the section from the Gezhouba Dam in Hubei and the river’s estuary. Another three-month fishing ban for a separate section upstream of the Gezhouba Dam started in February.

Fishermen affected by the ban will receive subsidies, reported Xinhua.
