China releases 1,200 sturgeons

11 April 2012
More than 1,200 artificially-bred Chinese sturgeons were released into the Yangtze on 8 April to increase wild stocks of the rare species.

Hundreds of volunteers and residents helped to release them in the city of Yinchang, Hubei province.

The fish were trained for the wild for a month before being released by the Chinese Sturgeons Research Institute under the China Three Gorges Corporation.

The Chinese sturgeon, which is thought to have been in existence for more than 140m years, is listed as a wild creature under state top protection.
