12 killed in Jiangsu road accidents

18 April 2012
Twelve people were killed and 26 others injured following a number of pile-ups on a highway in Jiangsu province on the morning of 15 April, local authorities said.

Thirty-two vehicles were involved in seven separate accidents on a 5km section of the Shenyang-Haikou national highway in the city of Lianyungang.

An initial investigation said the visibility was low due to heavy fog when the accidents occurred.

In the southern province of Guangdong, a tank truck containing 26 tons of hydrochloric acid overturned in Nanxiong city on 15 April, resulting in an acid leak, Xinhua reported.

Rainfall caused the acid to wash down into the Zhenjiang River, and local residents were warned to stop drinking its water.

An emergency plan was implemented and the cause of the accident remains under investigation. No casualties were reported.
