Jiangsu ranks third in terms of aging population

18 April 2012
A recent research report by Nanjing Normal University said that Jiangsu ranks third in the country for its aging population. In 2000, the number of its residents aged 60 or more stood at 9.22m, or 16.2 per cent of the provincial total. By the end of 2011, the number rose to 13m, accounting for 17.4 per cent of the total. Some 2.12m people are at least 80 years of age.

Heading the table are Sichuan and Chongqing, according to the research. This is largely because many young people from the interior region migrate to coastal cities for better paid jobs, it said.

Mass migration over the past decade has lowered the age of residents in coastal areas such as Shanghai and Zhejiang, which topped the table in 2000. Another coastal province, Guangdong, now has the youngest population of all regions in China.

Jiangsu’s ranking has not changed over the past 10 years in the national table, mainly because most migration happens within the province, the research said.
