Yangtze campaign to standardise ship ID

18 April 2012
The Yangtze Maritime Safety Authority has launched a four-month campaign to standardise identification of all vessels within its remit. Officials say that between 1 April and 30 June, shipping lines need to conduct their own checks and make any necessary corrections. If their vessels are found wanting, the MSA will ask them to comply but will not impose a fine. However, between 1 and 30 July, severe fines will be imposed on those who have not complied.

The campaign will ensure that the identification on vessels is identical to that recorded on the vessel register and vessel inspection certificate. Vessels without names, port origins and load lines will be fined, forbidden to depart or banned from sailing completely. Crew members responsible will have their qualification suspended for three to six months.

The Yangtze MSA will also find out how widely the automatic identification system (AIS) is being used by vessels within its remit.
