Company chief summoned to Wuhan after Yangtze accidents

25 April 2012
The Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Jiangsu Provincial Transport Department jointly summoned senior managers of Longchuan Transport Co, based in Jiangdu city, Jiangsu province to Wuhan for discussions about the company’s safety record.

This follows the ministry’s new warning system put in place early this year to crack down on accidents via road and waterway.

The company in question has been involved in four accidents on the Yangtze since last year. Two of its vessels collided with other boats and two became stranded due to overloading. Although no casualties or leakage resulted from the accidents, officials from the administration found it necessary to order a face-to-face meeting with the company representatives and to hear their plans to make amendments.

According to the procedure set out by the ministry, the company is required to submit plans for improvement in writing within 10 working days of the meeting. Those who don’t deliver on their promises will be reprimanded publicly and pursued.
