Landslide threat prompts major relocation

25 April 2012
About 20,000 people from Dongba county in Hubei province will be relocated in 2012 because of the threat of landslides around the Three Gorges Dam, local authorities said.

The relocation process is under way, said an official, with schools and hospitals in vulnerable areas being among the first buildings to be evacuated.

Earlier this month, three villagers were killed after a landslide buried their home in Changyang county, Hubei province.

China National Radio recently reported that some 100,000 people may have to be relocated over the next three to five years due to the threat of natural disasters, according to Liu Yuan from the Ministry of Land Resources.
