Sichuan plans three transport routes overseas

2 May 2012
Sichuan in southwest China has pledged to open up three major transport routes linking the landlocked province to overseas markets, according to an action plan recently issued by the provincial government. The plan covers a number of areas such as industrial sectors, cohesive urban and rural development, infrastructure planning and public services. The aim is to establish Chengdu as a regional hub.

The three transport routes that the government will develop are the southern route to the Indian Ocean via Kunming, the eastern route via the Yangtze to the Pacific and the northwestern route via the Eurasia railway to the Atlantic. Efforts will also be made to increase direct flights to North America, Europe and Southeast Asia. These improvements in transport infrastructure will help boost foreign trade, officials said.

The plan is part of provincial government efforts to help build the so called ‘Western Triangle’, referring to Chengdu, Chongqing and Xian, so that in the next 10-20 years, it will be as dynamic as the Yangtze River Delta region is today.
