Storms damage homes and ground airplanes

2 May 2012
Heavy rain and hailstorms in Hunan province have affected more than 750,000 people in Yueyang, Yiyang, Zhangjiajie and Yongzhou.

The rain caused mountain torrents, landslides and floods in these areas, and 47,500 residents were evacuated. Some 32,600 hectares of farmland have been affected, and nearly 15,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed by the extreme weather.

Further west, in Sichuan province, tens of thousands of passengers were stranded in Chengdu Shuangliu airport after almost seven hours of thunderstorms that started on the evening of 29 April.

The airport authorities said 39 inbound flights failed to arrive on schedule, 72 inbound and outbound flights were cancelled, and four inbound flights returned to the place of departure.
