Yellow River likely to flood this summer

16 May 2012
The Yellow River, China’s second longest river, is likely to flood in its middle and lower reaches this summer, said the Yellow River Conservancy Commission under the Ministry of Water Resources.

Long-term weather and climate forecasts predict heavier rainfall than in recent years in the southern part of north China, the Yellow River region, the Yangtze River region and the Huaihe River region in east China.

Flooding has been a rarity on the Yellow River in recent years. Chen Xiaojiang, director of the commission, said the last time it had experienced a flood with a flow of more than 10,000 cubic metres a second was in 1982.

Nearly 1.9m people live close to the Yellow River’s lower reaches and a flood may pose grave threats to their safety, said the commission.
