Jiangsu to increase minimum wage by 15%

23 May 2012
The central government has approved Jiangsu province’s plan to increase its minimum wage by an average of 15 per cent as of 1 June. According to the plan, the monthly minimum wage across different category areas will be increased, in the first category area, for instance, by Rmb180 to Rmb1,320 and that of the second category area by Rmb170 to Rmb1,100.

The minimum wage does not include overtime pay and supplementary pay for special jobs such as working in high temperatures and handling hazardous products.

Analysts believe that the most labour-intensive companies in Jiangsu pay more than the new minimum wage and any negative impact on businesses will therefore be small.
