LNG bunkering to be trialled on Yangtze

23 May 2012
Jiangsu Maritime Safety Authorities recently gathered China Classification Society, Nanjing Port Fuel Co and Jiangsu Haiqi Group recently to study the technical standards of LNG bunkering, vessel conversion to LNG fuel and the construction of bunkering facilities on the Jiangsu stretch of the Yangtze River. Agreements were signed on 18 May between the parties to work together on these projects.

According to the agreement, the parties have agreed to look at the technical implications of switching to LNG-powered engines on selected vessels and to conduct a trial run after technical standards are formalised. Once the trial run is successful, 10 bunkering facilities will be built in the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze, between the Yangtze Mouth and Nanjing. Conversion will be tried on sand barges, bulk carriers and container vessels between 1,000dwt and 5,000dwt.

Initial studies show that LNG is 30-55 per cent cheaper than diesel and more environmental-friendly.
