Oil leak causes closure of Shanghai reservoirs

23 May 2012
Reservoirs supplying Shanghai’s water were closed after a fuel ship sank at the mouth of the Yangtze River on 18 May, Shanghai Daily reported.

The crew of nine were rescued from a fuel transporter owned by Shanghai Tongyin Petrochemical and the ship was refloated, the Shanghai Maritime Administration said.

The administration did not disclose how much oil was spilled, but said that “greasy dirt” was spotted along the south bank of Shanghai’s Changxing Island after the incident. A clean-up operation is under way.

The city government said that the leak did not affect the city’s water quality as the major reservoirs were all closed from taking in water after the incident.
