Korea helps to clean up Chaohu Lake

30 May 2012
South Korea’s Korea Environment Corp will provide technology to clean up Chaohu Lake, China’s fifth-largest lake, and produce biogas from the waste.

The state-run company has signed an agreement with Hefei city in Anhui province to exchange technology and know-how to decontaminate Chaohu, one of the most polluted lakes in China.

The Korea Herald reported that Hefei and Anhui authorities plan to spend Rmb70bn on improving water quality, as part of a wider campaign to clean up the Yangtze River. About Rmb11bn of that money is to be spent on the clean-up of Chaohu, Korean officials said.

Technology will also be provided to treat urban waste and turn it into biogas, which can be used to heat buildings and power vehicles.

Officials of the two countries will work together to build a biogas plant capable of processing 200 tons of waste.
