Hike in rail freight prices

6 June 2012
China has raised railway freight prices in order to cover increased operational costs, reported Shanghai Securities News. This is the seventh price hike since 2003, with the most recent being in April last year, industry executives said.

The National Development and Reform Commission raised the national rail freight by Rmb0.01 per tonne per kilometre to Rmb11.51, in order to relieve pressure from higher fuel and labour costs.

Shanghai Steel Service Trade Industry Association Secretary Ye Liming said the timing and extent of the increase would put “unbearable” pressure on some steel companies.
