Pollution warning for China’s seas and rivers

6 June 2012
China’s Vice Minister of Environmental Protection Wu Xiaoqing said the quality of the near-shore water of north China’s Bohai Sea and the East China Sea as well as water in five of the nine bays along China's coast was “extremely poor”. The five bays are Bohai Bay, the Yangtze estuary, Hangzhou Bay in Zhejiang province, the Minjiang estuary in Fujian province and the Pearl River estuary in Guangdong province.

Mr Wu said that among 469 stations that monitor water quality along 10 major river basins, including that of the Yangtze, Yellow and Pearl rivers, 61 per cent recorded a rating of between the first and third grade last year. Just over 25 per cent were classified as fourth or fifth grade, meaning that people should not come into direct contact with the water.

Around 14 per cent of stations gave readings below fifth grade, meaning that the water could only be used for agricultural purposes.
