Yangtze high water level alert

13 June 2012
Yangtze Maritime Safety Authorities have issued a warning on extremely high water levels in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The section between Chenglinji and Wuhan, it says, is experiencing a rapid rise in water levels, and now stands more than three metres above average level in the past five years. This may trigger new landslide sites and exacerbate existing trouble spots, it warned.

Yangtze MSA has already deployed 126 emergency help outlets along the river under its remit and more than 3,000 officers on round-the-clock patrols. They are also checking communication cables to make sure they are fit for purpose.

Maritime safety officials are focusing particular attention on bridges, river junctions, terminals and anchorages for vessels carrying dangerous cargo.
