Government campaign to reduce Yangtze emissions

27 June 2012
The Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport gathered top managers from major ports and shipping lines on the Yangtze River last week to discuss plans to reduce carbon emissions. The deputy director of the administration, Dan Naiyue, said that efforts should be focused on structural reform to save energy and cut emissions. This is to be achieved by way of accelerating the vessel standardisation programme and supporting efforts to build “green” ports. There is also a need to promote applications of new fuel and new technology and encourage innovation of emission reduction technology, he said.

Sinotrans Yangtze China Shipping Corp, the largest barge operator on the Yangtze, claims that its fuel consumption has already been reduced by 41 per cent or 210,000 tons since 2008, when reduction efforts first started. Nanjing Port Group has converted 20 of its petrol-powered tyre cranes into electric-operated units, cutting carbon dioxide emission by 2,220 tons and sulphur dioxide by 7.55 tons each year.
