Increasing size of vessels passing Three Gorges shiplocks

27 June 2012
Reports from the Yangtze River Administration say that the government-driven vessel standardisation programme has led to a more than doubling the average size of vessels passing the Three Gorges shiplocks from 1,040 dwt in 2003 to 2,844 dwt by the end of 2011.

The five-step shiplocks started operation on 18 June 2003. The ongoing vessel standardisation programme aims to increase the tonnage of vessels so as to better utilise capacity of the shiplocks. In recent years there has been a rapid increase in the number of 5,000 dwt vessels passing the shiplocks, though the exact figure has not been released.

The cargo volume passing through the shiplocks exceeded 100m tons by 2011, up from 34m tons in 2004.
