52.6m travel on Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line

3 July 2012
Some 52.6m passengers have travelled on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway since it opened a year ago, according to official data reported by Xinhua.

The 1,318km railway took three years to build at a cost of Rmb217bn. Trains were initially allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 350kph, which was later reduced to 300kph. The railway has shortened travel time between China’s two leading cities to about five hours.
