Sharp rise in Jiangyin wine imports

3 July 2012
The volume of wine imported by Jiangyin port in Jiangsu province increased more than 60-fold year-on-year to 88,652 litres in the first five months of 2012, according to local statistics.

The main exporting nations were the US, France, Germany, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.

Lower prices, partly the result of the crisis in the Euro zone, were cited as one factor behind the increase in imports.

Although foreign wine sales are growing fast in China, consumption levels remain low by international standards. According to organisers of the Vinexpo Asia-Pacific trade fair, the average mainland Chinese drinker consumes 1.3 litres of grape wine a year, compared with 2.4 litres in Japan and 50 litres in France.
