Luzhou waterway bureau issues emergency alert

4 July 2012
Heavy and continuous rains in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River over the past few days resulted in the water level at Erlangtan nearly doubling from 6.44 metres on 29 June to 11.77 metres on 1 July. The rapid rise of the water level posed a shipping hazard, Luzhou waterway bureau in Sichuan province warned in its recent circular.

Senior officials have been dispatched to inspect the local navigation equipment repair centre, the dangerous cargo terminal and Fangshan multi-use, common-user terminal to make sure that they are prepared for the flood season. Round-the-clock emergency communication procedures are also in place to ensure the smooth transfer of information. Working boats are striving to clear the debris and restore damaged buoys.

Further downstream, officials have placed large horsepower tugs on emergency standby in the waters between the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam. Fixings at all the anchorages have been inspected and vessels have been warned that shipping could be suspended under atrocious weather conditions.
