Shipowner punished for fake DG documents

11 July 2012
A shipowner was kept in police custody for 10 days and given a fine of Rmb1,000 for shipping dangerous cargo using fake documentation, according to a recent report by the Yangtze River Administration. The Yangtze police are still investigating the source of the fake documents.

Hua An Ji 8, the container barge in question, was loading at Wuhan Yangluo terminal on 11 April when local maritime safety officials boarded the vessel for a random inspection. They discovered fake documents relating to permits for shipping dangerous cargo and special qualifications of the crew members. Another fake document appeared to give permission for the barge to carry more containers than it was designed for.

The barge’s log book showed that, between February and March this year, the barge carried dangerous cargo three times on the Wuhan-Shanghai route using the fake documents.

Experts believe that shipping dangerous cargo is currently the most profitable business on the Yangtze. Price wars among container barge operators have squeezed their profit margins significantly.
