Three Gorges opens sluices as water level rises

11 July 2012
The Three Gorges Dam opened its sluices on 7 July as a flood with a peak flow of 56,000 cubic metres per second raised the water level in the reservoir to more than 151 metres.

Wang Rujun, director of the Yangtze River Maritime Safety Administration, said the dam will gradually discharge more water to adjust levels in the upper and lower reaches of the river. The administration is also preparing to safeguard ship security by issuing an alarm for the coming floods.

Chen Lei, minister of water resources, said that with heavy rain forecast in coming weeks, local authorities should minimise damage through the timely release of information and proper adjustment of water discharge in dams and reservoirs. The Ministry of Land and Resources also warned local authorities to prepare for possible geological disasters triggered by torrential rains.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs activated its lowest-level emergency response plan on 5 July to address the floods in Sichuan province, where 13 people have died since heavy rains started on 29 June, reported China Daily.
