Three-quarters of Guangdong sewage discharged into rivers

11 July 2012
Nearly 76 per cent of the sewage generated in Guangdong province last year was discharged directly into local rivers, according to official data reported by China Daily.

Guangdong Provincial Department of Water Resources revealed that 12.53bn tonnes of sewage was discharged in the southern province in 2011, an increase of 110m tonnes over the previous year. Some 9.5bn tonnes was discharged directly into local rivers.

Industrial wastewater accounted for 55 per cent of sewage discharged.

According to the year-end report, water quality is worst in rivers in eastern Guangdong, with 30 per cent of them heavily polluted. However, it concludes that water quality in all the province’s major rivers is poor, threatening the health of local residents who live along riverbanks.

Chen Guangrong, deputy director of the provincial department of environmental protection, said Guangdong will increase its daily sewage treatment capacity by 1m tonnes this year and build another 1,000km of sewer networks.
